SERVING AND HELPING OTHERS

The parishioners of St. Philip's give generously of time and talent and treasure to bring light to those in our community and the world.

Christian Social Concerns

The parish's Christian Social Concerns Committee responds to direct needs of community neighbors by funding and encouraging volunteering with organizations that serve the marginalized and underserved in Transylvania County.

Eucharistic Visitors

Eucharistic Visitors are lay people who bring the consecrated elements from Sunday communion services to parishioners and others who seek to be included in the Body of Christ but are unable to attend Sunday worship services. The visitors provide a brief worship service from the Book of Common Prayer and serve as a meaningful link that connects the home bound to the larger congregation. Eucharistic Visitors are trained by the clergy and lay leaders and licensed by the diocese prior to being deployed to bring communion.

Flower Delivery Ministry

Following Sunday services, members of the Flower Guild create flower arrays in vases. Members of the Flower Delivery Ministry deliver the arrangements to people’s homes or places of business each Monday afternoon. A personalized card is attached referring to the reason for the flowers, i.e. congratulations, condolences, thank you for work done in the community, reassurance that the person is remembered by the church.

Friendly Visitors

This ministry consists of men and women who visit in person or by phone, members or friends of St, Philip’s who are home bound or who are unable to regularly attend church. They may be living at home or in long term care facilities. Brief reports of the visits are sent to the Rector and to the adjunct clergy who serve as Pastoral Associates.

Parish Neighbors

This is a ministry where members of the parish lovingly supply nourishment for those who need a good meal or two while recovering from an illness or coping with a difficult situation. If you want to help your neighbors by sharing your homemade cuisine and providing food when needed for those who attend St. Philip’s, this is just the ministry for you. Please consider joining when it is time to consider your time and talent contribution to St. Philip’s.

Prayer Chain

An on-going prayer ministry comprised of active congregants of St. Philip's who pray for the needs and concerns of St. Philip’s family and friends. Permission must be obtained from the person/family involved prior to submitting a request. The person/family may remain anonymous. Requests are made and communicated by email and/or telephone, and all requests are held in strict confidence. This prayer list is separate from the weekly prayer list printed in the Sunday bulletin.

Fibers and Friends

Prayer shawls, lap blankets, baby blankets and hats, and many other items are knitted or crocheted for newborns and people who are seriously ill, in mourning or just in need for some other reason. Recipients are prayed for as the item takes shape. You may create your contribution at home or join a group in the church parlor on Tuesdays from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Justice Ministry

Our team meets monthly, and our activities range from writing or visiting inmates that we have a connection with, to educating the parish on the need for criminal justice reform, to providing support to families of incarcerated individuals. We are an ecumenical, community-based group with members from the local Unitarian Universalist, United Methodist, and Lutheran churches.

Parish Birthday Cards

Pastoral Care Committee remembers all our parish family on birthdays, anniversaries and personal notes to those who have lost a family member. With the help of God, we will continue to remember these very significant dates with caring and love.

TOWEL Ministry

The primary mission of the Towel Ministry is to permit elderly and disabled residents of Transylvania County to safely stay at home for as long as possible by making appropriate modifications to the home to accommodate their mobility restrictions. Typical projects include wheelchair ramps, handrails, grab bars and chair modifications.

Veterans Ministry

Volunteers visit veterans in local nursing homes, hospitals, or at home. Other support is given when possible, providing veterans with local contacts for various needs they may have. While this ministry may provide a small number of services, the primary objective is to remind our local veterans that they are not alone and not forgotten.  On Veterans Day each year over a hundred graves of veterans in our cemetery are honored with flags.

Rice Street Community Garden

Since 2011 this ecumenical outreach venture has been growing crops at St. Philip's. Located next to the church, the garden is a great way to raise food to give to the needy and invite cooperative work and fellowship among St. Philippians, folks in the neighborhood and anyone else who might want to join us. Harvest from the garden is distributed to Sharing House and Bread of Life.

Recycling

This group of volunteers empties recycling bins throughout the parish and recycles the contents so that less waste enters our county landfill.
